GDPR

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, in Dutch: Algemene verordening gegevensbescherming, AVG) is the legal framework in the EU for the protection of personal data of natural persons (living individuals). Each member state has a national implementation of this framework. In the Netherlands this is called the Uitvoeringswet Algemene Verordening Gegevensbescherming (UAVG). The national implementations can deviate slightly from the European Framework, though the differences are so minimal that in practice the articles of the GDPR can be taken as leading.

Even though the GDPR is often called the “privacy law,” the GDPR is definitely not just about privacy. The processing of personal data touches on numerous fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens. Consider, for example, the prohibition of discrimination and exclusion and the right to equal treatment. All fundamental rights and freedoms affected by the processing of personal data are equally protected by the GDPR.
