In this workshop, Sander Prins and Jeroen Bakker, researchers at Utrecht Data School, will introduce you to social media data collection and analysis. After this hands-on session, you will be able to gather social media data yourselves. We’ll be using 4CAT: Capture and Analysis Toolkit, which doesn’t require any programming experience.

The Centre for Digital Humanities recently launched its own installation of this toolkit developed by the Digital Methods Initiative. With this web-based toolkit, it is possible to collect and directly analyze data from various social media platforms (Twitter, Telegram, Instagram, TikTok and more).

During this beginner’s workshop, 4CAT will be introduced and you will be shown what possibilities this toolkit has to offer for gathering and exploring data. Afterwards, you will be able to compile your own datasets for research. The tutorial part of this workshop lasts from 13:00 to 15:00 hrs. After that, participants have the option to stay for questions about individual applications for their education and/or research.
