Data are becoming increasingly important in the humanities. In this one day course, intended for researchers and teachers in the humanities, you will learn the basics of statistical data analysis.

Due to the great interest in the previous training, we are repeating this Statistics course. The training will be given by prof. Hugo Quené. He will start with core concepts: sample, data. Next, they will discuss the principles underlying statistical descriptions and analyses: variation, probability. You will learn how to describe statistical properties of data (centre, distribution), how to choose an appropriate statistical test, and how to perform a simple statistical tests.

Importantly, you will also learn what you can and cannot learn from a statistical test (significance, effect size, power). In addition you will learn how to discern meaningful patterns amidst random variation in data (correlation, regression). Throughout the course you will learn to interpret and assess statistical results. Moreover, you will start learning to use R software (and its companion Rstudio) to analyze data and visualize patterns.

Admission is free, but the number of participants is limited, so please register as soon as possible (first come, first served). If you are unable to attend, please cancel your registration by sending an email to CDH@uu.nl, so another participant can take your place. You will be asked to do some preparations in advance (readings, downloading software and datasets).

Please note: the Centre for Digital Humanities aims to promote digital literacy amongst staff-members and therefore compensates attendance to these courses in terms of DCU (22 hours = 1 DCU). The DCU’s will be automatically settled with your department at the end of the course.
