Frisian dialects project

Key words

  • Language variation data

Short description

The Frisian dialects projects is a tool to collect language data through an online experiment presented in the form of a game.

Background

The Research Software Lab built this application for a group of researchers affiliated to both Utrecht University and the Fryske Akademy. The application tests the knowledge of language variation within Frisia (Northern part of the Netherlands). Participants in the online game hear voices of Frisian speakers with different accents. They can then locate the origin of the speakers on a map of Frisia by clicking on a Google map interface. The answers are stored and used for linguistic research.

This is a follow-up project to Dialect for Drongo, an application that allowed visitors to the DRONGO language festival to test their knowledge of language variation within the Netherlands.
