ArtLab
Utrecht University ArtLab is an interdisciplinary team of specialists in the digital and material study of cultural heritage. They develop and apply innovative methods to investigate, document, analyse and present works of art, heritage objects and historic environments. ArtLab brings together expertise in scientific imaging, heritage science, immersive experience production, digital art history and material engagement.
Their approach is collaborative and hands-on: together with partners, they formulate research questions and translate them into practical research workflows. These can range from a single imaging session to extensive research campaigns and the development of interactive or immersive digital experiences.
ArtLab operates as a hybrid laboratory. Alongside their physical lab for material engagement, experimentation and prototyping, they maintain a highly portable set-up for working on site. Their imaging and analytical equipment is designed to be deployed in museums, archives, churches, galleries and other heritage environments, allowing ArtLab to function as a mobile laboratory wherever the objects or research questions require them to be.
Methods and expertise
3D imaging
ArtLab is specialised in complex high-resolution 3D documentation of cultural heritage. We work across a wide range of scales, from tiny highly detailed objects to monumental artworks, architectural interiors and historic environments. Where standard approaches are insufficient, we develop tailor-made acquisition workflows to address challenges of scale, accessibility, surface properties or material complexity. Our methods include photogrammetry, LiDAR, microphotogrammetry and multispectral 3D imaging.
2.5D imaging
ArtLab develops high-resolution 2.5D imaging workflows for the study of shallow relief and fine surface topography. Techniques such as Photometric Stereo and Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) allow subtle variations in texture, tooling, incisions, printing, wear and surface deformation to be visualised and analysed in ways that are difficult to achieve with conventional photography. ArtLab also develops custom experimental hardware and software solutions for automated acquisition, surface reconstruction, relighting and analysis.
Multispectral Imaging
Multispectral imaging can reveal features of artworks and heritage objects that are difficult or impossible to observe under normal illumination. ArtLab works with high-resolution photography, ultraviolet fluorescence photography (UVF), infrared photography (IR) and reflectography (IRR) and related imaging techniques. We combine these methods where appropriate into registered multimodal datasets, allowing different forms of information to be studied and compared directly.
Analytical Heritage Science
ArtLab develops integrated research workflows in which imaging techniques are combined with analytical methods for the identification and characterisation of materials. Depending on the research question, these may include X-ray fluorescence (XRF and MA-XRF), spectroscopy and other methods carried out in collaboration with specialised research partners. By bringing imaging and analytical data together, we can investigate materials, production processes, alterations and conservation histories across different spatial scales.
Material engagement
Experimental research with materials and their making to shed new light on historical as well as contemporary material practices and expertise across the arts, crafts and sciences.
Computer vision and computational art history
ArtLab applies image processing, computer vision, machine learning and quantitative methods to both individual objects and larger collections. Computational approaches can help identify, measure and compare visual or material features that are difficult to assess manually. Applications range from pattern, surface and watermark analysis to image registration, dataset comparison, network theory approaches, automated feature detection and the quantitative analysis of larger groups of artworks.
Digital visualisation and immersive experience design
ArtLab develops interactive ways of exploring, interpreting and presenting research data. These range from high-resolution image viewers and interactive 3D models to 3D animations and virtual reality experiences. Rather than treating visualisation as a separate final step, we explore how digital environments can function both as research tools and as ways of making complex cultural heritage data accessible to wider audiences. The international quality and impact of this work have been recognised through several industry awards (DIA, Lovie).
Who we work with
Utrecht University researchers

ArtLab supports researchers across Utrecht University who want to integrate imaging, material analysis, digital methods or experimental reconstruction into their research. We can contribute from the earliest stages of project design by helping to translate research questions into methodologies, design technical workflows and assess feasibility.
ArtLab is part of the Faculty of Humanities, but its facilities and expertise are available to researchers across Utrecht University. Researchers from other faculties can collaborate with ArtLab on projects involving 3D digitisation, scientific and technical imaging, digital visualisation, and the development of virtual, augmented or mixed-reality applications. We welcome interdisciplinary collaborations in which these methods can contribute to research questions beyond the humanities.
Heritage institutes, heritage sites, libraries, and art market

Museums, heritage organisations, libraries, archives, historic sites, conservators, restorers, galleries, art dealers and other cultural heritage professionals can contact ArtLab directly for specialist imaging, digitisation, analytical and documentation services. Projects can range from a single technical imaging session or object digitisation to larger research and documentation campaigns. We can provide tailored workflows for specific objects, collections or sites and, where useful, work alongside conservators, curators and external analytical specialists.
Students and educators

ArtLab integrates its methods and expertise into teaching across Utrecht University. Educators can involve ArtLab in courses, tutorials, workshops and practical assignments, ranging from demonstrations and short hands-on sessions to longer project-based teaching in which students work with real cultural heritage objects and research datasets. We also provide opportunities for students to engage with ArtLab through internships, thesis projects, tutorials and research projects using our equipment, methods and datasets.
