This CDH Small Grant supports the organisation of activities (e.g., workshops, seminars, guest speakers) with a core focus on digital humanities. Activities should contribute to our mission of strengthening the computational perspective in the humanities.

What is eligible for funding?

The funding process is intentionally designed to be flexible, in order to encourage initiative and creativity. Events can take various formats, such as workshops, brainstorm sessions, hackathons, sprints, lectures, or mini-conferences, and can be domain-specific or broader in scope, provided they align with the CDH mission. Proposals will be evaluated on:

  • Scholarly value and impact: a clear connection to digital humanities;
  • Educational component: enhancement of participants’ digital competencies is considered an advantage;
  • Location: the event must take place at Utrecht University (unless co-funded by another institution) or online;
  • Accessibility: the event should be open at least to all staff of the Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University.

What can be requested?

Up to €2.000,- per activity, covering costs such as travel, accommodation and subsistence for attendees and/or speakers, venue rental, and catering. Expenses may be reimbursed in advance or afterward, based on a pre-approved budget. Personnel and indirect costs are not eligible for reimbursement, except for student assistance. Applicants may also make use of the CDH event infrastructure and support staff: e.g. for registrations, catering, and promotion.

Who can apply?

The main applicant must be either an enrolled student or an employee with a paid position at the Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University. Students are required to maintain enrolment, and temporary staff must hold a valid employment contract, for the full duration of the event.

How to apply?

Applicants are required to submit a proposal of 300-500 words, describing the event’s theme, target audience, its connection to digital humanities and the CDH mission, the expected impact and outcomes, as well as a concise budget.

Proposals can be sent to cdh@uu.nl, with the subject line ‘CDH Small Grants Proposal – DH workshop’. We would appreciate it if, when applicable, you could provide an abstract about the event suitable for publication on the CDH website and newsletter. Please acknowledge CDH funding in all external communication related to the planned event.

When can applications be submitted?

This is an ongoing call, open as long as funds are available. Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and distributed as evenly as possible across the four departments. Decisions are made within one month.
