Explore the fundamentals of qualitative data analysis with NVivo in this entry-level workshop led by Julia Straatman, researcher at Data School. This session is designed to familiarize you with the basic functionalities of NVivo, including importing, coding, organizing, and searching your data.

NVivo is a software package specifically designed to assist researchers in organizing, analyzing, and gaining insights from unstructured or qualitative data. Whether you are working with interviews, open-ended survey responses, journal articles, social media, or web content, NVivo can help you effectively manage and analyze your data.

The workshop is set up in a ‘follow-along’ format, where the instructor will demonstrate the various features and options using an example case on a big screen. This means the pace of the workshop will be decided by the participants. Participants will have the opportunity to follow along on their own laptops.

If time permits, participants will also have the option to work on their own research using NVivo. By the end of the workshop, you will have a solid understanding of the basic functionalities of NVivo, enabling you to import, code, organize, and search your data efficiently.

Practical information

This workshop will take place on Monday, 12 May 2025, from 13.00 to 16.00 hours in the Digital Humanities Workspace of the Utrecht University Library, City Centre (room 0.32, Drift 27, Utrecht). Admission is free.

Level

This workshop is designed for absolute beginners, catering specifically to individuals with little to no experience with NVivo. The workshop will be in English.

Preparation

Please bring your own laptop to the workshop. It is required for participation to install NVivo from Utrecht University’s website and complete a small homework assignment to familiarize yourself with the software prior to the workshop. You will receive this homework assignment by email before the workshop. The presenter will be using NVivo 14. You can use both versions 14 and 15 during the workshop.

If you have not installed and tested NVivo prior to the workshop, your participation cannot be guaranteed. It is the responsibility of the participant to have the software properly installed on their laptop. If the installation cannot be completed, please contact Utrecht University’s IT Service Desk to help you.

Due to our funding, priority will be given to teachers, researchers and students of the Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University for this workshop. This workshop has a maximum capacity of 12 participants.
