Explore the fundamentals of qualitative data analysis with NVivo in this entry-level workshop led by Julia Straatman, researcher at Data School. This session is designed to familiarise you with the basic functionalities of NVivo, including importing, coding, organising, and searching your data.

NVivo is a software package designed to help researchers organise, analyse, and gain insights from unstructured or qualitative data. Whether you are working with interviews, open-ended survey responses, journal articles, social media, or web content, NVivo enables you to manage and analyse your data effectively.

The workshop follows a ‘follow-along’ format: the instructor will demonstrate the various features and options using an example case on a large screen, and participants can follow along on their own laptops. The pace of the session will be guided by the participants.

By the end of the workshop, you will have a solid understanding of the basic functionalities of NVivo, allowing you to efficiently import, code, organise, and search your data. If time allows, you will also have the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned to your own research project.

Level

This workshop is designed for absolute beginners, catering specifically to individuals with little to no experience with NVivo. The session will be in English.

Preparation

Please bring your own laptop to the workshop. Before attending, you are required to install NVivo from Utrecht University’s website and complete a brief homework assignment to familiarise yourself with the software. This assignment will be sent to you by email in advance. The presenter will use NVivo 15, but both versions 14 and 15 can be used during the workshop.

Important: If you have not installed and tested NVivo on your laptop before the workshop, your participation cannot be guaranteed. It is the responsibility of the participant to ensure the software is properly set up. If you experience installation issues, please contact Utrecht University’s IT Service Desk for assistance.

This workshop is open to all. However, due to our funding, priority will be given to teachers, researchers and students of the Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University. A number of seats are reserved for participants from other UU faculties, allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis. If these spots are filled, please register to be placed on a waiting list. Should a space become available, you will be notified.
