Workshop OpenRefine platform

Event details

Date:
03 December 2021
Time:
15:00 - 17:00
Location:
Microsoft Teams

In this workshop, Frans de Liagre Böhl, data manager for the Faculty of Humanities, will provide a hands-on introduction to the OpenRefine platform. After this 2,5 hour session you will have enough experience to start using this tool.

As a researcher, you will find that many of your sources come in forms and formats which are unfit for your analyses. OpenRefine (previously Google Refine) is a free, open source and easy to use digital platform for structuring, transforming and enriching your digital sources. It enables you to reorganize your (messy) data without having to master the ins and outs of a programming language. The internal logging mechanism warrants for the transparency and reproducibility of your actions. During the session we will transform a messy txt file containing all members of Dutch governments since 2017, to a cleaned, well-structured tabular file.

Admission is free, but the number of participants is limited, so please register as soon as possible (first come, first served). You can register until 2 December. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your registration by sending an email to CDH@uu.nl, so another participant can take your place.

Please note: the Centre for Digital Humanities aims to promote digital literacy amongst staff-members and therefore compensates attendance to these courses in terms of DCU (22 hours = 1 DCU). This course (including preparation) counts for 3 hours, which is equal to 0,14 DCU. The DCU’s will be automatically settled with your department at the end of the course.
