Basics of Statistics – Hands-on training day for teachers/researchers by Hugo Quené and Kirsten Schutter
Data are becoming increasingly important in the humanities. In this one-day course, intended for researchers and teachers in the humanities, you will learn the basics of statistical data analysis. We start with basic concepts such as variation and probability, and will discuss the principles underlying statistical descriptions and analyses. You will learn how to describe statistical properties of data (centre, distribution), how to perform simple statistical tests, and what these tests tell us (significance, effect size, power). In addition you will learn how to find meaningful patterns amidst random variation in data (correlation, regression). Throughout the course you will learn to interpret and assess your statistical results. Moreover, you will learn to use R (and its companion Rstudio) for the statistical computations and visualizations taught in this course.
Admission is free, but the number of participants is limited, so please register as soon as possible (first come, first served). You can register until 5 October. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your registration by sending an email to CDH@uu.nl, so another participant can take your place. You will be asked to do some preparations in advance (readings, downloading software and datasets).
Please note: the Centre for Digital Humanities aims to promote digital literacy amongst staff-members and therefore compensates attendance to these courses in terms of DCU (22 hours = 1 DCU). This course (including preparation) counts for 8 hours, which is equal to 0,36 DCU. The DCU’s will be automatically settled with your department at the end of the course.
