Event details

Date:
09 June 2022
Time:
16:00 - 17:00

This is the fourth talk of the Digital Hands ON series, organized by the Groningen Centre for Digital Humanities:

Mickey Engel, University of Hamburg
From the commentary to the source and back again: a digital structuring of the Paduan commentary tradition on Aristotle’s Physics

In this lecture, Engel will present a new research tool (under construction, in collaboration with the University of Hamburg and TopDownUP). The digital tool is based on a modular approach to the study of commentaries on Aristotle’s Physics, constructing ad hoc textual networks around alternating focal points. The structure of the research tool allows detecting patterns and strands in the corpus as a whole, focusing on constructed segments according to alternating keys, either thematic or referential. In the lecture, Engel will first present the basic features of the research tool and will then explain how its structure enables the successful attainment of potential research goals. He will then describe the potential application of the research tool on other corpuses which have parallel, commentary oriented structure.
