In this hybrid lecture Rainer Hegselmann, philosophy professor at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, will talk about the bounded confidence model.

The bounded confidence model is an extremely simple model. In that model individuals take seriously only those others whose opinions are not too far away from their own opinion. The model has a lot a lot of interpretations. Simple extensions cover radicalization, polarization, mis- and disinformation, but as well truth seeking in a social setting. Although the model and its extensions are very simple according to the definitions, numerous surprising effects arise.

About Rainer Hegselmann

Rainer Hegselmann (1950) studied philosophy, sociology, and political sciences at Ruhr–Universität Bochum. In 1988 he got a full professorship for practical philosophy at Bremen University. Hegselmann’s early research focused on foundational questions in ethics, logic and theory of argumentation, and the history of analytical philosophy, especially the logical empricists’ emigration under national socialism and austrofascism. Later he focused on modelling and simulation of social dynamics, especially the evolution of solidarity networks or the dynamics of opinions within groups. A model developed by him and a mathematician of Bremen University is now well known as the Hegselmann-Krause model. Hegselmann hold guest professorships and fellowship at several universities and advanced-study institutions. Find the paper on this topic by Hegselmann and Krause here.
